Colon Therapy
Colon Therapy is often referred to as Colonics, Colonic Irrigation or Colon Hydrotherapy. My clients often call me an Ayurvedic Colon Therapist, because I apply Ayurvedic Principles into Colon HeaIth. First, let's look at Colon Hydrotherapy. Then I will disclose information about Ayurvedic Principles in Colon HeaIth.
What is Colon Hydrotherapy?
Colon Hydrotherapy is the safe application of warm filtered water into the colon to flush away toxic build up. It is a restorative, painless procedure which is highly beneficial to maintain one's overall good health.
While gowned or draped, the client lies on the table. A small speculum, which is connected to pure water and also to a waste line, is inserted into the rectum. The therapist monitors the temperature and pressure of the water based on client's comfort level. Water is infused in and out of the large intestine continuously for about 45 minutes. It travels through a clear viewing tube, which allows one to see what is eliminated from the body. The hydrotherapy machine features disposable components such as a speculum, water line and waste line. These are connected to a purpose-built, closed system, in which waste matter is drained thru the machine to a sewer line avoiding any offensive odor.
Benefits of Colon Hydrotherapy
-
Helps to eliminate stagnant fecal matters by eliminating excess bacteria, toxins, gas, mucus, parasites and cellular discharges from the body.
-
Improves muscle tone and facilitates peristalsis movement in the large intestine.
-
Easy, non-chemical and effective way of preparing for Colonoscopy and Barium Enema.
-
Helps to remove chemical residuals from the procedures of Colonoscopy or Barium Enemas.
-
Naturally reduce toxic waste reabsorption or recycle into the body.
-
Extremely useful in alcohol and drug detoxification, since it helps eliminate toxins from the blood stream.
-
Most of all, Colon Hydrotherapy helps to eliminate old, hardened built-up fecal matter, leaving a much wider channel for the feces to pass through.
Why do I need colonics?
Many people think colon therapy is only for those who are very constipated. This is not true. Many people also think that if one has one movement a day, one is not considered constipated. This is not true either.
A lot of people have a regular bowel movement daily, yet during colon therapy, they are amazed how much build-up they have in their colon.
The large intestine — known as the colon — is five to six feet long, just about one’s height. Mouth to anus, the length of your digestive system averages 30 feet in length. Once your food has been digested and absorbed into your body (if you have a healthy digestive tract) in the small intestine, everything that is waste material drops into the cecum through the ileocecal valve.
The large intestine then begins absorbing liquid and starts to create stool. This is why the longer the waste stays in the colon, the harder and dryer it gets. As the liquid becomes a coating and lines the colon, it creates layer after layer of build-up as it dries out and becomes a stool. This is one reason, as we age, that our colon becomes stretched and enlarged as dried sediments get larger and heavier. During colon therapy, you can investigate what part of the colon the matters are from by their shape and color.
I believe almost everyone can benefit from colon therapy. However, please observe the contraindications listed below, which will exclude certain clients from colon therapy.
Colon Hydrotherapy should not be recommended for the following conditions:
-
Abdominal hernia, or internal hemorrhaging.
-
Any recent abdominal surgery still in process of healing.
-
Abnormal distension caused by extreme vata disorder. The vata symptom should be treated first by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner or any other health care provider.
-
Acute liver failure, such as liver cancer, or stage four hepatitis.
-
Anemia, or a very debilitated, or emaciated person.
-
Aneurysm.
-
Colon cancer (Or any other cancer only with doctor's permission and supervision).
-
Cardiac condition (Only with doctor's prescription, and supervision).
-
Crohn’s disease/ulcerative colitis (You may perform Ayurvedic basti at home; consult your health care provider).

-
Hemorrhaging.
-

-
Additionally, if you are under medication for any condition, you may consult your health care provider for any interference with additional water intake and absorption.

Colon therapy can be a very relaxing and pleasant experience, as well as a life changing experience. For people who are new to colon therapy, I would like to offer some advice for choosing the right equipment and therapist.

There are currently two types of FDA apprpved colon therapy devices. In our facility we have both systems, so clients have an option to choose. The first is called an open unit. The clients have an option to be left alone or therapist can be present. And it is designed for a client to insert the nozzle to introduce the purifed water. With open system, you use pencil size of nozzle rather than the thicker speculum. You can have privacy if you prefer to be alone during release. When you need assistance you can always buzz the therapist to come and help you. Open system basin design allows complete bowel and bladder evacuation as it is necessary at the same time. There is an odor exaust built in which makes the device odor free. It is equipped with dual filtration system with carbon and ultra violet disinfection.
The second system is called a closed system. This system requires a therapist to be present with the client throughout the session due to the fact that therapist will open the valve to assist to release. With a closed system, waste matter is evacuated through medical grade tubing attached to the instrument and to the client's rectal, and is eliminated via drainage line. Of course it is odor free and water filtration is as the same as open system. I recommend clients visit a prospective facility and satisfy themselves as to the cleanliness and integrity of the business. Make sure that they use disposable speculums and nozzles, including the water line and waste tubing. For you information, our closed system is from Clearwater Colonhydrotherapy, and open system LIbbe device. Your experience could be even better if the therapist is knowledgeable, kind and loving with a good heart.
